Regional Banks in New Jersey Expand Branches in Underserved Communities

Several regional banks are opening new branch locations in New Jersey communities that have historically lacked convenient access to traditional banking services, part of a broader financial inclusion push that bank executives say also makes sound business sense given growing local demand.
The new branches are concentrated in parts of Essex, Passaic, and Camden counties where residents have often relied on check-cashing services or traveled significant distances to reach a bank branch. Bank executives say the expansion follows internal research showing these communities represented an underserved but creditworthy customer base that had simply never been directly targeted for branch investment.
"For a long time, banking industry conventional wisdom treated these neighborhoods as too risky or not profitable enough to justify branch investment," said a regional bank executive involved in the expansion. "That assumption was wrong, and frankly it was also lazy. We've found strong deposit growth and loan demand in every one of these new locations."
The new branches typically include expanded financial literacy programming and small business lending specialists, reflecting a broader strategy of pairing physical branch access with services aimed at helping residents build credit history and access small business capital. Community development advocates have generally welcomed the expansion while noting that branch access alone does not fully address broader barriers to financial inclusion.
Bank officials say they plan to open several additional branches in similarly underserved New Jersey communities over the next two years, contingent on the continued performance of the initial expansion locations.
