New Jersey Nail Salons Adopt Safer Ventilation Standards Amid Client Demand

Nail salons across New Jersey are increasingly adopting improved ventilation systems this year, a shift industry associations say is being driven by growing client and worker awareness of air quality concerns tied to chemical exposure from nail products.

Several salon owners have installed dedicated ventilation systems at individual manicure stations, moving beyond the general air conditioning most salons have historically relied on. Industry groups say the shift reflects both regulatory encouragement and increasing consumer interest in salon safety practices, with some clients now specifically asking about ventilation before booking appointments.

"Clients used to only ask about the price of a manicure. Now we're regularly getting questions about ventilation and product ingredients," said a spokesperson for a regional nail salon trade association involved in promoting the improved standards. "That shift in client awareness has been a bigger driver of change than any single regulation."

Salon owners who have made the ventilation upgrades say the investment, while significant, has also improved working conditions for nail technicians, who spend far more cumulative time exposed to salon air quality than individual clients. Several salons have used the upgrades as a marketing point, specifically advertising improved ventilation as a differentiator from competitors.

Industry associations say they expect ventilation upgrades to become increasingly standard across the state as consumer awareness continues growing, even in the absence of a specific statewide mandate requiring the change.
