New Jersey Manufacturing Sector Adds Jobs for Sixth Straight Quarter

New Jersey's manufacturing sector added jobs for a sixth consecutive quarter, according to state labor data released this week, led by hiring gains among pharmaceutical, food processing, and advanced manufacturing employers across the state.

The sustained growth marks a notable reversal from the manufacturing employment declines New Jersey experienced over previous decades, as the state lost significant industrial employment to lower-cost regions and overseas manufacturing. State economic development officials attribute the recent turnaround partly to reshoring trends among companies seeking to reduce supply chain risk and partly to targeted state incentives aimed at advanced manufacturing employers.

"We spent thirty years telling ourselves manufacturing was a legacy industry New Jersey had permanently moved past," said a state economic development official who presented the labor data. "These numbers suggest that story was premature, at least for the kind of high-value manufacturing we're seeing grow now."

Pharmaceutical manufacturing has been a particularly strong contributor, benefiting from the state's established life sciences workforce and existing industry infrastructure. Advanced manufacturing employers producing automation equipment and specialized components have also expanded hiring, often citing access to skilled technical workers as a key location factor.

Labor economists caution that sustained manufacturing job growth will depend on continued investment in vocational training programs to ensure the workforce pipeline keeps pace with employer demand for skilled technical positions.
