State economists released a new economic forecast this week projecting steady, moderate growth for New Jersey through 2027, citing continued strength in healthcare, logistics, and financial services as the primary drivers expected to sustain the expansion.

The forecast projects gross state product growth roughly in line with the national average over the projection period, a notable shift from prior years when New Jersey's growth trailed national figures. Economists attributed the improved outlook partly to sustained financial sector relocation into Jersey City and Newark and partly to continued strength in the state's logistics and life sciences sectors.

"New Jersey has quietly stopped being an economic laggard relative to the country as a whole, which wasn't always true over the past couple of decades," said a state Treasury Department economist who presented the forecast. "We're not projecting explosive growth, but steady, broad-based growth across multiple sectors is arguably a healthier outcome than a boom concentrated in a single industry."

The forecast flagged several risk factors that could alter the projection, including potential interest rate changes, national economic conditions, and the pace of continued corporate relocation from New York. Officials emphasized that the projection assumes no major economic disruption over the forecast period.

Budget officials say the forecast will inform revenue projections used in upcoming state budget planning, though they cautioned that economic forecasts of this length carry meaningful uncertainty.
