Jersey City Fintech CEO Marcus Chen Takes Startup Public on Nasdaq
Marcus Chen rang the opening bell as his Jersey City-based payments company Ledgerline completed its Nasdaq debut, capping a decade-long climb from a two-person startup to a public company.

Marcus Chen rang the opening bell at Nasdaq this week as his Jersey City-based payments company, Ledgerline, completed its long-anticipated initial public offering, capping a decade-long climb from a two-person startup working out of a shared office space to a publicly traded company valued at roughly $2.1 billion.
Chen founded Ledgerline in 2016 to help mid-sized retailers process cross-border payments more cheaply than legacy banking rails allowed. The company relocated its headquarters to Jersey City's waterfront district five years ago, a decision Chen has credited with helping Ledgerline recruit engineering talent unwilling to commute into Manhattan but still wanting proximity to the city's financial networks.
"Jersey City gave us Manhattan-adjacent credibility with investors without Manhattan rent, and honestly without the Manhattan commute burnout that was costing us engineers," Chen said following the bell-ringing ceremony. "A lot of people assumed we'd move to New York the moment we raised a serious funding round. We never did, and I think that decision paid off."
Ledgerline's IPO priced above its expected range, and shares climbed further in early trading, making Chen's personal stake worth an estimated $310 million on paper. The company processes payments for roughly 40,000 retailers globally and employs close to 900 people, with the majority of its workforce still based at its Jersey City headquarters.
Local officials have pointed to Ledgerline's growth as validation of Jersey City's yearslong push to position itself as a fintech hub distinct from, but complementary to, Manhattan's financial sector.
