Jersey Shore Wellness Retreats Draw Visitors Seeking Digital Detox Weekends

A small but growing wave of wellness retreats along the Jersey Shore is drawing visitors seeking phone-free weekends built around beach yoga, journaling sessions, and group activities designed to encourage participants to disconnect from constant digital connectivity.
The retreats, typically running Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, ask participants to store phones in a locked box for the duration of the stay, with organizers providing a shared landline for emergencies. Organizers say the strict digital detox format was initially a hard sell to prospective guests but has become the retreats' primary selling point once attendees experience it.
"Almost everyone tells us the same thing on Friday — they're nervous about giving up their phone for 48 hours," said one retreat organizer running weekend programs out of a converted beach house. "And almost everyone tells us the same thing on Sunday — that the anxiety disappeared within a few hours and they didn't want their phone back."
The retreats have found a consistent audience among remote workers and professionals in high-stress industries who describe constant digital availability as a significant source of burnout. Several retreat organizers say word-of-mouth referrals from past attendees have become their primary source of new bookings, with many retreats now selling out months in advance during peak summer season.
Organizers say they are exploring shoulder-season programming for the fall and spring, betting that demand for digital detox experiences will hold up even outside the traditional Jersey Shore summer tourist season.
